BIG WASP

2004

brass quintet

first performed by thistle brass, 2004, Glasgow.

About the Piece

Big Wasp is about fear and about panic. In this particular instance, the object of fear is a wasp: a buzzing, flying, stinging insect, normally small in size.

Except this wasp is big. How big? Well this raises an interesting question about the relationship between the size of the wasp and one’s level of fear. As an example, which would you be more afraid of: a wasp the size of your head, a wasp the size of a person, or a wasp the size of a house?

Whichever one you decide, Big Wasp is about that wasp.
